Obit of the Day: "The Mother of the Snowbirds"
Like the Blue Angels in the United States, Canada’s Air Force has their own air demonstration team, “The Snowbirds.” The group was founded in 1971 in Moosejaw, Saskatchewan by Captain O.B. Philp and Lois Boyle, his aide and secretary. Mrs. Boyle was given the task of naming the team, which was done through a contest in local elementary schools. She fought, along with Capt. Philp, for the existence of the Snowbirds who were considered an unnecessary expense. After Capt. Philp was transferred Mrs. Boyle became the group’s biggest advocate and keeper of their history.
Mrs. Boyle, who was awarded a Centennial Medal in 1967 for her invaluable work on the Moosejaw base, passed away at the age of 79. At her funeral current and former Snowbird pilots formed an honor guard and seven of the jets gave her a flyby.
