Obit of the Day: George Steinbrenner’s Girlfriend
Several months after George Steinbrenner died in July 2010, his former girlfriend Mary Jane Schriner made public nineteen letters the NY Yankees’ owner had written her while he was a student at Williams College, between 1949 and 1952. The letters, which revealed a more tender side to “The Boss,” were to be published in a book and one letter was even printed in the New York Times.
Then the New York Yankees came calling. They refused to allow the letters to be published. (Although the letters were Mrs. Schriner’s property, the writer maintains copyright.) The book was killed. Even Mrs. Schriner’s attempt to donate the letters to the Baseball Hall of Fame was rejected. So like any other 78-year-old living in the 21st century, she started a blog. (You can read her past work on mjschriner.wordpress.com. The last entry is a notice of her death by one of her children.)
Mary Jane Schriner, who turned down two marriage proposals from Mr. Steinbrenner, died at the age of 79.
