Obit of the Day: Navajo Codetalker
Frank Chee Willeto enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps 6th Division which hosted the legendary Navajo “Code Talkers” who managed to confuse the Japanese by using their native language as radio code. Mr. Willeto was trained as a code talker and served at Okinawa and Saipan.
After the war, he became a leader within the Navajo tribe serving as tribal councilman and president of the Navajo’s Pueblo Pintado chapter. He would eventually be selected as vice-president of the Navajo Nation in 1999, serving under Milton Bluehouse.
Mr. Milleto and other members of the 6th Division were awarded the Congressional Silver Medal in 2001 for their service in World War II.
