Obit of the Day (Historical): Nevil Shute (1960)

British author whose most famous work was On the Beach, which OOTD read in high school. (Deals with folks in Australia who are waiting for the radiation cloud to descend from a US-USSR nuclear war and kill them all. Cheery.)

Interesting things about Shute. Wrote 27 novels in 23 years. His first love was airplane engineering and wrote novels on the side while designing aircraft. Big conservative who left England to live in Australia because of England’s high tax rate and “welfare state.”
