Obit of the Day: General for Five Doctors

Actually he began as a colonel. Colonel Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart first appeared in 1968 as a British officer who would help various iterations of Dr. Who on and off for 40 years. The Colonel who was promoted to Brigadier General and knighted while defending the United Kingdom and earth from the alien life that consistently attacked, was featured most with the third Doctor, Jon Pertwee. His final appearance as the General was in 2008 on the Doctor Who spinoff, The Sarah Jane Adventures.

The actor, Nicholas Courtney, has as busy a life as his fictional persona. Born in Cairo, he spent time in France and Kenya as a child. He found acting and although his first love was the stage, television paid the bills.

The video clip is from 1971 and features Courtney’s most famous line and the title of his autobiography, Five Rounds Rapid. (Clip from youtube, but property of BBC.)
