was Eleanor Roosevelt gay

Asked by Anonymous

Depends on who you ask. A large group of scholars believe that Mrs. Roosevelt had a relationship with Lorena Hickok, a journalist from the AP. The two exchanged over 3000 letters beginning in 1932 and ending with Mrs. Roosevelt’s death in 1962.

The letters share some intimate details, for example here is what Ms. Hickok wrote in a December 1933 letter:  “I’ve been trying today to bring back your face…Most clearly I remember your eyes and the feeling of that soft spot just northeast of the corner of your mouth against my lips.”

But because of the era, and social mores, the best we can do is come up with a strong probability. (The same holds with scholarship in the last decade suggesting that Lincoln was gay.) There are plenty of books and articles on the relationship between Mrs. Roosevelt and Ms. Hickok. Check them out and see what you think.
