Obit of the Day: Their Mom’s Cooler Than Your Mom
Justine Cordwell once danced with the 16 wives of an African tribal chief. She carved African art with native carvers using Boy Scout tools. She was an expert on the Yoruba culture in Nigeria. She married an RAF officer she met in Africa, John Cordwell, who was the inspiration for a character in the film The Great Escape. They ran the Red Lion Pub on Lincoln Avenue in Chicago.
And she played a mighty good game of “Pretend,” see above.
Mrs. Cordwell had a doctorate in African Studies from Northwestern University and just last year published a paper on the department’s website. She was 91 and she was a really interesting person.
