Obit of the Day: Three Different Teams, Four World Series

Dick Williams, Hall of Fame manager, has passed away from a brain aneurysm. Williams who won over 1500 games in 22 seasons managed to take the Boston Red Sox (1967), the San Diego Padres (1984) to the World Series and won in 1972 and 1973 with the Oakland Athletics. (Apparently Williams’ success with the A’s wasn’t enough for their eccentric owner, Charlie Finley, who let him go before the 1974 season…which ended with the A’s winning a third straight title.)

Williams also coached the Montréal Expos, leading them to the fascinating 1981 strike-effected playoffs and the Seattle Mariners.

Williams full managerial stats are found here.

Williams was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2008. He was 82 years old when he died.
