Obit of the Day: Mantecore the Tiger
On October 3, 2003 as a the audience watched in horror Roy Horn, one-half of the famed Las Vegas duo Siegfried & Roy, was attacked by one of their Siberian tigers - Mantecore. Mr. Horn had a puncture wound in his neck, critical blood loss, and suffered a stroke - on his 59th birthday. Mr. Horn, who was partially paralyzed during the tragedy, retired from regular performance.
Siegfried Fischbacher and Mr. Horn refused to blame the tiger for the incident. They insisted that Mantecore was not trying to kill Mr. Horn and have even stated that the tiger saw that Mr. Horn was having a stroke and was trying to pull him to safety. Audience member accounts are not consistent with that re-telling. But Siegfried & Roy prevented the tiger from being put down after the attack.
Mantecore, who Mr. Fischbacher raised from a cub, died on March 19, 2014 at the age of 17.
