Obit of the Day: Large Largesse

In July 2010 Allen and Violet Large won the Atlantic Lottery’s (Canada) Lotto 6/49 jackpot worth $11,255,272. If you thought they were lucky, you’re right. But what they really were was incrddibly generous. They spent the next few months giving 98% of it away.

Keeping about $250,000 for themselves, they gave shares to Allen’s children and grandchildren and then donated the rest to various charities around their home province of Nova Scotia. Hosptials in Truro and Halifax, a church in Truro, and various other organizations, including fire departments were beneficiaries of the Large’s generosity.

Violet Large, who passed away at age 79, gave a message to the audience of the Association of Fundraising Professionals who were presenting the Larges with the 2011 Maritime Outstanding Individual Philanthropist Award: “Tell them we haven’t regretted a thing. We were happy to do it.” Mrs. Large was unable to attend because she was battling ovarian cancer, which would claim her life on July 16, 2001.
